Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is normally run as an 8 week programme designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on the groundbreaking research of Dr.Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Dr.Christopher Germer, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness, care and understanding.

Open Floor Movement Practice:
Open Floor is a conscious movement practice. It supports us to move and include all that happens in our lives with regard to our feelings, thoughts, and being in relationship with ourselves and other people. We can learn to soften towards life’s challenges and turn old repetitive thought patterns into creative opportunities for change. We learn to respond to obstacles, push out limits and embrace the uncertainties of life. Open Floor  is a place for creative focus and loving attention where connection, compassion and community grows.

The 8 week course has been integrated into a two weekend intensive experiential course. Caitríona and Anne are delighted to facilitate this pioneering collaboration of MSC and Open Floor Movement Practice.

Further Information

Mindful Self Compassion:
The three key components of self-compassion are self-kindness, a sense of common humanity, and balanced, mindful awareness.

  • Kindness opens our hearts to suffering, so we can give ourselves what we need.
  • Common humanity opens us to our essential inter-relatedness, so that we know we aren’t alone.
  • Mindfulness opens us to the present moment, so we can accept our experience with greater ease.Together they comprise a state of warm-hearted, connected presence.

Self-compassion is innate to all of us and can be learned by anyone. It’s a courageous attitude that stands up to harm, including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism, self-isolation, or self-absorption. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with kindness, forgive ourselves when needed, relate wholeheartedly to others, and be more authentically ourselves.

Open Floor Movement Practice:
Open Floor Movement Meditation Practice supports us to show up and learn to stay with our experience whether it’s good or bad; to feel our power and to make things happen in our world. When we live an embodied life we are fluid, flexible, and free to experience all of the wild and subtle moments of our everyday lives.

What to Expect:

  • Friday evening session will be an opportunity to settle in,familiarize yourself with the surroundings of Ashe House, warm up the muscles of mindful meditation and an opportunity to experience Open Floor movement practice!
  • There are two sessions on Saturday and two on Sunday as follows: each session includes short themed talks and exercises, teaching and practice of the core Mindful Self Compassion Meditation practices, followed each time by Open Floor movement  practices, group discussion and sharing.  The goal is for participants to directly experience self-compassion and learn practices that evoke self-compassion in daily life through embodiment.
  • Following Weekend One you will be asked to continue to practice all you have learned to weave in both informal and formal Self-Compassion practices  in an embodied way into your everyday life, starting with short practices and building up to 30 minutes per day. Time is given in Weekend two  to exploring experiences and challenges that arise between weekends.
  • MSC is primarily a compassion training program rather than mindfulness training like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), although mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion. MSC is also not psychotherapy insofar as the emphasis of MSC is on building emotional resources rather than addressing old wounds. Positive change occurs naturally as we develop the capacity to be with ourselves in a kinder, more compassionate way.
  • It is said that “love reveals everything unlike itself.” While some difficult emotions may arise when practicing self-compassion, MSC teachers are committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for this process to unfold, and to making the journey interesting and enjoyable for everyone.
