Pre-Orientation Course Conversation
Once your deposit has been received and prior to attending your chosen course, Anne will arrange a phone call or zoom call at your convenience for a Pre-Course Orientation.
This is to ensure that the course you have chosen is suitable for this time in your life, and that there is time on the call together to answer all your questions about the course such as time commitment, logistics, payments etc.
What would it feel like to finally put down a resentment, a regret, or an old hurt that you’ve been carrying for far too long?
How would your life be different if you could meet the past and present with self-compassion instead of blame, and choose freedom over the weight of an unforgiven wound?
If the answer is Yes to either of these questions, and you would like to explore your own relationship to forgiveness through the lens of mindfulness and self-compassion, then welcome to this experiential course, Forgiveness for Self and Others.
In this course, we’ll take a compassionate, non-judgemental look at forgiveness — for the harm we may have caused ourselves, and the harm caused by others — and discover how self-compassion can give us the strength to finally let go.
We Will learn
Come join us on this experiential and rich exploration of Forgiveness for Self and Others.
The intention for the weekend is to:
- Practise fierce self-compassion with words and gestures
- Review the theory and research on self-forgiveness
- Explore five steps to forgiveness for harm we may have caused ourselves — and harm caused by others
We will learn that self-forgiveness requires a strength that can come from fierce self-compassion, and we will practise the three aspects of fierce self-compassion before learning the practice of forgiveness itself.
You’ll explore the five steps to forgiveness as taught by Dr. Chris Germer, one of the founders of the Centre for Mindful Self-Compassion (CMSC). These steps apply equally to forgiving ourselves and forgiving others:
- Mindfulness
- Self-compassion
- Wisdom
- Intention to forgive
- Responsibility to protect
On self-forgiveness: to forgive ourselves, we first have to open to the guilt or shame of having caused pain — rather than turning away from it. As the saying goes, “forgiveness is giving up all hope for a better past.” Self-compassion is what allows us to stay with that discomfort long enough for forgiveness to become possible.
Forgiving ourselves doesn’t mean excusing what happened. It means recognising our own humanity — that our actions arose out of a whole history of causes and conditions, many beyond our full control — while still taking responsibility for the harm caused and committing to not repeat it. Sometimes we carry guilt for things that were nobody’s fault at all, simply painful; these too can be met with compassion rather than judgement.
Not everyone will feel ready to forgive by the end of the weekend, and that’s alright. Even the wish to one day be able to forgive — held gently, without forcing it — is itself part of the practice.
Using exercises, practices, and experiential learning, we will also explore The Fourfold Path, as described by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter Mpho Tutu in their book The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path to Healing Ourselves and Our World.
Format: One weekend, non-residential retreat Dates: Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th December Location: Ashe House Fee: €250 (Deposit €150 — non-refundable; Interim payment of €100 also available)
Pre-Orientation Course Conversation
Once your deposit has been received, and prior to attending, Anne will arrange a phone call or Zoom call at your convenience for a Pre-Course Orientation. This is to make sure the course is the right fit for you at this time in your life, and to leave space to answer any questions you have about time commitment, logistics, and payments.
This course is open to anyone who recognises that an unforgiven hurt — towards themselves or another — may be limiting their full potential, and who would like new resources for working with forgiveness in order to move towards greater freedom and ease.
This includes anyone ready to take the next step, with the support of self-compassion, towards their own unique way of working with forgiveness. All are welcome: the general public, mental health and healthcare professionals, meditation and mindfulness instructors, yoga teachers, wellness coaches, and educators at all levels.
This is a resource-building course rather than psychotherapy. However, since we will be touching difficult and tender material with self-compassion, challenging emotions may arise. Anne is committed to co-creating, along with course participants, a safe and brave space for this shared experience.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the theory and research underpinning self-forgiveness
- Practise the three aspects of fierce self-compassion as a foundation for forgiveness work
- Apply the five steps to forgiveness — mindfulness, self-compassion, wisdom, intention to forgive, and responsibility to protect
- Use these steps to work towards forgiving harm they may have caused themselves
- Use these same steps to work towards forgiving harm caused by others
- Explore the Fourfold Path to healing, as taught by Desmond and Mpho Tutu, through guided exercises and experiential practice
